DIY Nail Whitener for Clean and Clear Nails

Are your nails discolored? Mine get a little funky looking from time to time, especially if I have used a cheap nail polish or have been doing a lot of work with my hands. This always embarrasses me. Who wants funky looking fingers, like not in a good way?

I thought about investing in nail whitener, but that can get pricey. I thought I would try something out to see if it would work to brighten my nails and give me a break from covering up the embarrassing funk with nail polish.

Instead of buying the whitener in a small bowl I mixed:
1/4 cup of very warm water
2 teaspoons of baking soda
3 teaspoons of peroxide

I mixed this up (it will bubble) and then I soaked my nails in the mixture for 1 minute per hand. I noticed that my hands were foaming up a bit from the peroxide, so I knew right away this was working its magic.

When I removed my hands from the mixture I could see right away that my nails looked better. They were whiter, they felt great too.

This cost maybe 20 cents (if that) to make for a treatment. It was much less expensive than buying a chemical based product and it seriously only took about 2 minutes to do.

If you are a smoker with cigarette stains I bet this would help to remove them too.

While we are on the subject of nails...

My mother in law has the grossest tail nails I have ever seen. They are yellow and so thick it is like a horror movie whenever I see her bare feet. I cringe, I gag a little. I feel like shrieking and running away.No Joke. They are that gross.

So, one day after being subjected a sighting of her toe nails I started looking into why toe nails look like that sometimes and what to do about them.

Toe Nails get thick and yellow due to fungus sometimes. There are home remedies to take care of this embarrassing and unsightly problem.Vapor Rub, such as Vicks is a common household medicine cabinet item. All you have to do is grab the jar of Vicks, smear it all over your toes and put on a pair of old socks. Go to bed with the vapor rub slathered on your toes. Do this for 2 to 3 weeks. It will smother and kill the fungus that causes your toes to look so yucky. Problem solved and you won't have to hear me gag over your feet. This remedy is said to work for 8 out of 10 people. What do you have to lose by trying it? Nothing! You will only have invested a few dollars in your home remedy at worst case. If it doesn't help, then see a doctor and get a prescription to take care of your toe funk.

I hope these 2 remedies help you with your problem nails!

  2. What an awesome review ...Thank you so much for the tips ...This would probably work for my Mom's toe nails too!!

  3. I honestly don't take care of my nails. I pick them down. I've been doing it since I was four, and that was 27 years ago! I've tried growing them out, but it never lasts long. I'll have to keep trying so I can set a good example for my daughter!

  4. Thank you for sharing this I will have to try this on my toe nails.

  7. Do you know how many bottles of nail polish I have, over 30. For some reason, I have to have nice looking nails. I paint my nails twice a week and try out different colors. I do use a good nail cream to keep them for getting dry.

  8. I guess you could say my nails are funky. After getting chemo in 2011 it made them peely, so weird. LOL!! This is a great tip! Thanks for sharing :)

  9. This sounds great to try for my nails. I usually just file my nails and use a lot of lotion for dry skin.

  10. I recently switched to using Gelish and love it so far. I have very brittle nails and this is much better for them than the pink and whites that I've had for yrs. While I'd love to have naturally great nails, I don't but these are my compromise.

  11. i dont do a lot with my nails now, but i used to use polish all of the time. my nails became yellow and ugly so i stopped painting them - i wish i had had your whitener recipe then! thanks for sharing!
