Tips for Visiting New York

With a population of over 8 million people, New York is the largest city in the United States. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Many people are scared when traveling to the Big Apple for the first time. Here are some guidelines that you may want to follow to make things go more smoothly.

Don’t Be Skittish

New York has a stereotype of being one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Although the city does have its share of crime, it is actually a lot safer than most people think. In fact, Neighborhood Scout doesn’t even rank it as one of the 100 most dangerous cities in the country.
In general, you don’t need to be nervous about traveling in the city. There are some areas that are more dangerous than others. For example, you may want to be extra careful traveling through the Bronx, while most of Manhattan is pretty safe. However, it is still a good idea to be careful, because dangerous crime can occur in any city.

Learn How to Navigate the City

While the city is a lot safer than people give it credit for, New York can also be a stressful place to travel. You will want to look at a general map of the city while trying to get around. You don’t want to be overly reliant on your phone’s GPS. It is always a good idea to bring a paper map with you in case your smartphone dies.
Choosing the right transportation is also very important. You would be surprised by how quickly you can get tired while walking around the city. There are tradeoffs between taking a cab, bus system or subway. If you aren’t sure what option is the best, then you should look into the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for more information on the best ways to get around different parts of the city. They have a number of resources that can help you save money and avoid stress.

Eat Out Wisely

There are over 4,200 restaurants in New York City. Some of these eateries are among the finest in the world.
You may be tempted to eat out at some of the city’s finest restaurants. However, you will need to be careful if you are on a tight budget. Here are some ideas that you may want to try if you need to save money:
  • Try some of the great cuisines in Chinatown.
  • Eat some of the thin crust pizzas from local vendors.
  • Look at some of the humbler delis in the city.
All of these options are great ways to eat out without breaking the bank. You can read more on the post How to Make the Most of New York - On a Shoestring.

Visit the Smaller Shopping Plazas

New York has a number of very popular shopping centers. While these places can be very exciting to visit, they can also be very expensive and have large crowds. It is definitely worth checking out the smaller shops instead.
You can find a number of great boutiques on the lower east side of the city. You can also find some great artistry places in Brooklyn. These places tend to have much better prices than Macy’s or the shopping centers around SoHo. You also won’t have to fight the crowds.
