6 Creative Sandwiches to Pack Your Kids For School
School lunch boxes are often filled with the same sandwiches. Most kids bring a peanut butter and jelly or a turkey sandwich to school every day. You probably don’t eat the same thing for lunch every day. Chances are, your kids don’t like doing it either. It’s difficult to get creative when it comes to school lunches. It needs to be something that lasts in the lunchbox, doesn’t make a huge mess, and can be eaten without being reheated. However, there are more options than you realize. If you want to get a little more creative for your little ones, here are some sandwiches that you can try.
Peanut Butter & Banana
If your kids are sick of the same old peanut butter and jelly, try adding a twist. Peanut butter and banana sandwiches give your children a proper serving of fruit and they taste delicious. For some extra sweetness, you can drizzle some honey on top of the peanut butter too. Just slice up the banana and make a layer of it on top of the peanut butter.
Turkey Pita Pockets
If your kids love turkey sandwiches, but they’re starting to get tired of them, turkey pita pockets can switch it up without getting too crazy. Pitas add a whole new flavor to foods, and they are delicious. Instead of just turkey, make a salad with turkey meat in it. Toss in some ranch or your child’s favorite salad dressing. Stuff the pita pocket with the salad and wrap it in plastic wrap. It might wind up being your child’s new favorite school meal.
Ham & Cheese Roll-Ups
Ham and cheese is another common sandwich that can get old really fast. Adding a twist can salvage the love for ham and cheese, just like the turkey sandwich. However, instead of a pita, this one is done with a wrap. All you need to do is get some flour tortillas. Put a thin layer of mayonnaise on the tortilla and then top with a layer of ham. Place a layer of sliced cheddar cheese on top, and then add some lettuce, tomato, or whatever your child will eat. Roll it up like a burrito and wrap with plastic wrap. The tortilla will completely change the taste and your child will be happy to eat ham again. For some extra flavor, you can use some flavored mayonnaise such as the garlic or chipotle mayonnaise from Hampton Creek.
Cucumber Cream Cheese Sandwich
The cucumber cream cheese sandwich is amazing for many reasons. When your kids are in school during the hot months of the year, the cucumber will cool them off while they eat their lunch. It’s also healthy and ensures that your kids are getting a serving of green vegetables. The cream cheese adds extra flavor and a decadent creamy texture.
All you need to do is spread cream cheese on the sandwich the way you would be peanut butter or mayo. Slice some cucumbers nice and thin and place them in a few layers on top of the cream cheese. Your kids might be a bit hesitant about the sandwich at first, but once they try it, they will probably ask for it all the time.
Chicken or Tuna Sandwich
Canned chicken and tuna can be a life saver during the school year. Chicken and tuna salad are both easy to make and delicious. They’re both made the same way, so it just depends on taste preference. If your child likes both, you can switch off so they don’t have to eat the same kind all the time, which is what you’re trying to avoid. All you have to do is add some mayonnaise to the canned meat. If your kids like pickles, some dill relish or chopped pickles taste delicious in both tuna and chicken salad. Spread it on some bread, and you have a delicious and healthy sandwich.
Egg Salad
Egg salad is another great sandwich that is full of protein. To make egg salad, all you need to do is dice some hard boiled eggs. Add mayonnaise and a dash of mustard to the eggs and mix it up. For some seasoning, add a little salt and paprika. Spread on a sandwich with some lettuce, and you have a delicious and healthy sandwich.
Sandwiches don’t have to be boring. Instead of packing your kids the same old stuff, it’s time to get creative so you know they’ll eat all of their food during lunch time.
