Mindfulness is a lot easier said than done.
Mindfulness is all about living in the moment, in the here and now. About not dwelling on the past, or worrying about the future. It’s about being aware and conscious - whether that’s of the scenery passing by in the car, or the impact that your actions can have on others at any given moment.
Kids are usually known for being pretty mindful. They are better at living in the present moment, and truly soaking up experiences for everything they’re worth.
But, something stands in the way of that…
While of course technology is amazing and can open the world to kids in miraculous ways, they put a bit of a wedge between children and their environments, friends, parents, and even boredom. Technology is the hand that leads kids away from moments of boredom - moments that could be spent reflecting, thinking, observing - into worlds of virtual distraction.
For parents, protecting this natural mindfulness is important, and one of the best ways you can do that is by setting healthy limits on device use.
Here’s how you do it…
There are tons of parental control applications out there, but not many of them truly focus on time limitations and teaching kids healthy device habits.
OurPact is one amazing parental control app that encourages parents to work with their kids to develop healthy device habits. It works like this:
Parents sign up for a FREE account at www.ourpact.com or in the iOS App Store. Then, you pair the child devices you want to manage to your account (pairing only takes a couple minutes and is super straight-forward) and then manage your child’s devices remotely!
With OurPact, management is possible through automated schedules or at-a-touch blocking. A couple examples of use:
Block access for one hour for a distraction-free family dinner.
Set up a schedule to block device access every night at bedtime until the morning.
Make sure social media and messaging apps don’t divert attention during homework
Block access ‘Until I Say So’ to encourage your child to do their chores.
OurPact has a family contract they encourage parents to sign with their kids to involve them in the process and hold them accountable to the agreements made. Before signing up for the app, they encourage you to discuss the rules and sign the contract with your child, so that they feel involved in the process, and not as though the limitations are being imposed upon them.
To encourage your child to be more mindful, set aside times of the day that OurPact limits access and encourage your child to just be. Who knows, before long you might want to have your device managed too! ;)
