Three Classic Cocktails You Have To Try At Least Once

Cocktails are ever-changing. There’s always a new drink that is taking the drinks world by storm; something new to try; an innovation to sample. Some of these choices have their moment in the sun and then fade away into obscurity, while others may linger for a little bit longer.

However, amidst all of this admirable innovation and excitement, there are the classic cocktails. They’re so important, it feels like they should be referred to as the “Classic Cocktails”, capitals and all. These are the cocktails that have been being sipped for decades, maintaining their popularity as the generations change along with drinking habits. Despite the relentless pursuit of progress, they retain their status at the top of the list, the cocktails that everyone should try at least once.

So while there’s nothing wrong with trying new and exciting cocktails, every once in awhile, why not try mixing up something with a heritage and history behind it? These options might not be flashy and exciting, but they taste delicious - after all, there’s a reason their popularity has endured.

Tequila Sunrise

Fruity with an unexpected kick, the tequila sunrise is famed for its appearance. The mix of red, orange, and yellow hues are meant to show the same colors as the perfect tropical sunrise - and they come pretty close!

To Make It

Fairly simple providing you use a light hand, you’ll need:

  • 6 parts orange juice
  • 3 parts tequila
  • 1 part grenadine syrup

The key to mixing a tequila sunrise is to - well, not mix! Pour the tequila and orange juice over a bed of ice, then add the grenadine syrup. If you try to mix it, the famous colors will bleed together and ruin the image, so keep a steady hand!

Cosmopolitan

This cocktail really hit the mainstream thanks to the drinking habits of Sex And The City’s Carrie Bradshaw, and has been a huge hit ever since. When you sample a “cosmo” - as they are colloquially called - it’s easy to see why they’re so popular. Deliciously fruity with an intriguing combination, if you’ve never tried it, you need to put that right ASAP.

To Make It

Add the following to a cocktail shaker:

  • ½ part Cointreau liquor
  • 1 and ½ vodka
  • ¼ fresh lime juice (preferably prepared yourself rather than from a carton)

Give it a good shake and there you have it; the defining cocktail of the 21st century so far!

Pina Colada

Finally, the pina colada. Sweet and smooth with a tropical taste, it’s easy to make and it tastes like a holiday in a glass. You’re going to need a cocktail shaker for this one too, but that aside, it’s simple and effective - just what you need to help you relax for an evening as you watched the sun go down.

To Make It:

Add to a cocktail shaker, along with ice:

  • 3 parts pineapple juice (if you can manage freshly procured then that would be ideal, but a carton is fine if not)
  • 1 part coconut cream
  • 1 part white rum

Shake and serve, preferably with a slice of lime or pineapple on the side of the glass to add to the tropical feel.
