How to keep the family happy on a road trip

There was a time when the main fun of a road trip was looking out of the window and watching the world go by but in our computerized, always-connected world, young children are likely to be glued to their tablets and taking in very little of their surroundings.
Although there are a plethora of gadgets and devices that you can invest in order to keep your children quiet on a long journey, it’s hardly an ideal solution, and does little to engage them. Here are some tips for spreading a little old-fashioned magic into any long trip with your family so that you all enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Involve the children
Rather than strapping the little ones into the back seat and then hoping for the best, involve them in the planning of the trip from the very earliest stage. Ask them what games or activities they would like to have in the car, show them a map of the route and point out interesting sites on the way they might want to stop off at.
If you're heading to a specific destination for a sole purpose, such as visiting distant relatives for a birthday celebration, you might not have a great deal of flexibility in your itinerary, but even if you can't incorporate all of the ideas your children have this time round, the fact that they are being listened too like adults and given the opportunity to contribute to the overall project will provide them with a great sense of achievement.
Do take the time to monitor what the children wish to take with them during the trip. Although it’s a great idea to give them a little autonomy, if the vehicle ends up being too cluttered the journey will be come more uncomfortable.
Choose your car with road trips in mind
If your family is expanding or you want to spend more time visiting relatives and, as a result, you suddenly find yourself needed to do a lot more driving, you may find yourself in the market for a new vehicle. With such a dizzying array of options available, it can be hard to know where to start.
Doing enough research to narrow down the make and model that best suits your needs is a good starting point as you can then, for example, search online for the most recent model Isuzu for sale and not have to wade through thousands of listings for other vehicles.
The larger the vehicle, the more room everyone will have, and this will dramatically increase their level of comfort during the trip. It will be much easier for younger children to nod off and go to sleep, especially if you provide them with a small pillow and blanket.
As a last resort
If all else fails or your children are too young to have embraced the technological revolution and therefore need distracting in some other way, simply bring a long a toy they have not actually seen before – one from the emergency chest. With any luck, they will be engaged for the duration of the journey.
