What Are the Qualities That Show That a Design is Good?

Getting a well-designed building is one thing. In fact, looking through magazines and architectural pullouts, you will come across glossy photographs of homes and buildings that look absolutely gorgeous. However, the saying ‘do not judge a book by its cover’, though cliché, comes to mind.
Looking good on the outside is not enough. Can this building hold its own if mother nature decides to throw one of her infamous tantrums? Will it be levelled to the ground or will it stand tall and proud? A good designer will go into all these details with you even before they get down to drafting prices.
Good architecture should be:

1    1. Sustainable

A building that cannot be sustained and maintained is not even worth having. Also, in the wake of environmental concerns, buildings should not be adding to the environmental issues. Some of them are designed in such a way that they generate too much carbon dioxide.

2    2. Should be accessible to all

Buildings should not only be accessible to the able-bodied. They should be accessible to those on crutches, as well as those on wheels. They should be able to admit guide dogs and any other equipment that a special needs person may need to have with them. Often times you will come across buildings that do not put the differently abled into consideration.

3.      Functional
What is the purpose of the building? Does it adequately meet that purpose? Imagine buying a building that you intend to turn into a set of offices for your company and you have been convinced that it would meet that purpose; only to find that the building is more suited for residential purposes than office-related ones?
You could find yourself in a building that seems multi-functional or just simply confused. You are not sure if it should be residential or should have office space.
4.      Durable
Craftsmanship matters here. The architect can only do so much as they do not do the actual physical work. What they do is instruct. If their instructions are well understood, then the conversion will be excellent. A well designed building should stand the test of time and the fury of nature. The strength of the structure of a building dictates whether it is going to be around for a long time, or whether the wolf is going to blow it down.
5.      Emotionally viable
Have you ever walked into a building and immediately wanted to turn back and run? If you are going to spend any length of time in a building, it should not awaken your flight mode. That will leave you depressed. If you are going to live in it, it should arouse feelings of calm and joy. Great architecture stirs the senses.
6. Economically viable
Real estate is one of the most popular investment choices. Most of the time when architects are working on a project, they have clients lined up waiting for completion. Making the building affordable becomes quite hard because there are so many vying for it. However, they must still strive to make it affordable.
