Are There Instances Where it Would be Advisable to Give Your Dog Cannabis?

You just shot coffee out of your nose, didn’t you? Your sweet little mutt on cannabis?! Your head is swimming with images of Paws stoned and acting crazy. Relax. This is not about your beloved, house-broken smoking pot.

Medical marijuana is recommended for people suffering from chronic ailments that are difficult to find relief for. Apparently, there is medical marijuana that can give relief to dogs as well. If your dog has been diagnosed with cancer, is in acute pain, suffers seizures, or has anxiety, there is cannabis oil that can give your dog some welcome relief.

Marijuana Oil?
It is derived from the marijuana plant, that is definitely obvious. The oil is extracted from the plant by separating the glands. There are at least 80 cannabinoids to be found in the marijuana plant. These include the THC ( tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the psychoactive component, which is the one you want to stay away from. CBD is the medical one; the one that gives you all the oils and other products that are meant for medical use.

Experts say that cannabis oil does not have the THC components that would result in an intoxicated dog. You could look up CBD oil for dogs to learn more about it.

Cannabis Oil on Dogs
Cannabis oil is used to treat the following:
·         Seizures
·         Nausea
·         Stress
·         Anxiety
·         Arthritis
·         Back pain
·         Symptoms of cancer
·         Gastrointestinal issues
Cannabinoids in Marijuana work together with the endocannabinoid system, which is a series of receptors found all over the body, to provide relief. They lessen symptoms like nausea, pain and anxiety.

Side Effects?
With proper dosage, your dog should be just fine. You do not have to worry about damage to the kidney or the liver. The dog will not get high either.

Potential Risks
Make sure that you do not overdose. Overdosing may lead to risks like:
·         THC toxicity. A pet that suffers this will have trouble standing or eating. Should this happen, the best place for your dog to find help is the vet’s.
·         Ingesting large amounts of marijuana has been proven to be life-threatening for dogs. You must therefore stick to the recommended dosage.
·         Cannabis oil is not a magical ‘cure all’ product. It is risky to treat it as such and end up creating even bigger medical issues for your dog.

How to Administer Cannabis Oil to Your Dogs
Cannabis oil is best administered to a dog orally. There are some oils for topical use too. However, it is best to follow the advice of your vet on dosage matters. Cannabis oil can be used together with regular medications, but again, get expert advice before you attempt this.

Availability of Cannabis Oil for Dogs
Getting your hands on some cannabis oil for your beloved pet may not be as straightforward as going to the pharmacy and getting it handed over. There are cannabis laws to be concerned about. Depending on where you live, you may be required to have a medical cannabis card which you can get from your doctor.
A veterinarian may not have any legal mandate to provide a similar card for your pet.

It is always worth looking into alternative treatments to find relief for your chronically ill pet, so checking out CBD oil for dogs should be right up that alley. However, ensure that you have the right information and the correct dosage.
