Planning A Festive Get Together? Take Note Of These Tips & Ideas!

Can you believe that Christmas is just a few short weeks away? Time has really flown by this year, hasn’t it? The chances are that every year, you like to do a little something to celebrate the festive season with your friends. To cut costs and save money, why not plan a festive get together at your home that everyone can attend, instead of going out for various meals? Come Christmas, money is tight, so any little ways you can save can be helpful.

Like the idea of holding a festive get together? Then, have a read of the below tips and ideas for planning an incredible night.

Decide who to invite

The first step to planning a festive get together is to decide who to invite. If you want to plan one event and get all of your Christmas socializing out of the way, make sure to include all your closest friends. Depending, of course, on the size of your home and whether or not everyone gets on with each other, that is.

Get creative with the food

When it comes to organizing the food for your get together, what you need to consider is what will be easiest. As well as, what will be the most cost-effective option. You could plan a sit-down meal, depending on how many people you have coming and everyone’s food tastes. Or, you could plan a buffet-style meal, where everyone can help themselves to a range of dishes. You could even ask each guest to bring a dish to contribute. Don't fancy cooking? Then how about ordering a takeaway?

Choose what drinks to serve

To ensure that you don’t spend all night handing out drinks, it’s a good idea to set up a drink’s tables where your guests can help themselves. On the drink's table, there should be a selection of soft and alcoholic beverages, including various wines. If you’re not that clued up when it comes to the best wines, you may find sites like WithMyWine.com useful. Want to give your get together a cozy twist? How about serving mulled wine and cider? Or, what about making champagne cocktails to mark the occasion?

Think about the entertainment

board games.jpg

If you want to ensure that your festive get together is memorable for all the right reasons, it’s important to think about the entertainment. You don’t want your guests to get bored, so it’s important to ensure that there’s plenty for everyone to do. How about getting some board games for everyone to play? Or, how about organizing a quiz of some sort? If your kids have games consoles, you can probably download a quiz onto one of them. If you’re stuck for entertainment ideas, ask each guest to bring an activity with them. That way, you’ll spend the evening trying out lots of different things. For some unique game ideas, sites like Thebalance.com can be useful.

So there you have it, all the best tips and advice for planning a fun and memorable festive get together for all your closest friends and relatives. It might take some tip and effort to plan it, but when it comes to how much money you'll save, it's worth it.

Best Dinner Rolls Recipe

There is nothing like homemade bread. This recipe is simple but yields big flavorful results!

Baking bread is my passion. I do it often and lose myself in the process, letting my stress melt away as I work the dough. It is a magical process for me.

I make bread all the time, but I have never shared this with you guys. Why is that? I have no idea! So today I want to share my best dinner roll recipe with you. It also makes lovely loaves of fresh white bread.

3 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 stick of real butter, softened
1/4 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of salt
2 1/2 teaspoons of active dry yeast
1 cup of warm milk
1 egg
1 teaspoons of butter flavored crisco
2 tablespoons of melted butter

Take a large mixing bowl, 'grease' it with Crisco and set it aside.
Add warm milk, sugar and yeast to a medium size mixing bowl. Stir it up and allow it to rest for 5 minutes.
Add butter, egg, salt and 1 cup of flour to the milk mixture, stir to break up butter and egg.
When those ingredients are incorporated add remaining flour.
As the mixture begins to form dough begin mixing with your hands, let that turn to kneading.
Knead the dough for about 3 minutes or until it is soft and pliable in your hands.

Transfer the dough to the greased mixing bowl and allow it to rise for about 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
You can tell the dough is ready when you press a finger into it and the dough rises to fill in the indentation.

Next, liberally butter the loaf pan or baking dish you are going to bake in.
Split the dough into handful size portions for dinner rolls or 2 large rounds for a loaves allow to rest and rise a second time for about an hour.

Brush tops of rolls or loaves with melted butter and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. The tops will be a lovely golden color when the bread is done.

Don't miss my slow cooker dinner roll recipe.

If you have a favorite bread recipe please share it with me!

Taking the Smell Out of the Holidays

This review was made possible by iConnect and Febreze.  I was provided compensation to facilitate this post, but all opinions stated are 100% mine.

The holidays are here! I mean, they are really here you guys! This is such an exciting time of year. The food, the family and all of the fun, but there is one thing about the holidays, things can get kinda stinky. It is a good thing that Fabreeze is here to spread holiday cheer while freshening things up!

In the spirit of the holidays, Fabreeze has brought back the hit song, #12Stinks of Christmas to spread cheer and smiles!

Doug E. Fresh, “The World’s Greatest Entertainer,” and social media sensation @ItsDougThePug kicked it old school and released the second installment of Febreze’s “The #12Stinks of Christmas.” Don't miss this rendition of a fun holiday song!

What is your favorite smell from the holiday season? For me it is freshly baked cookies! What about your least favorite smell? It is of course, the smells that happen after someone over indulges on those same cookies!

There is nothing better than family at the holidays, weird smells included. This year, have a smile with your smelly relatives and check out the video for the #12stinks of Christmas today for a good laugh!

This conversation is a part of a sponsored partnerships between Sweet Silly Sara and Portrait Innovations, all opinions are my own.

‘Tis the Season for Portraits!

Last week my family decided to do something different, something that our family has overlooked every single year. Family portraits! I think in this age of smartphones, we take so many photos that posing for professional portraits is something that many families, like mine, doesn't consider as often as we should.

We headed to our local Portrait Innovations studio and put on our biggest smiles. Unsure of what to expect, I took a go with the flow attitude and let our friendly photographer work her magic, and magic she did! Both of my kids had a ton of fun smiling for the camera!

We had such a good experience that I have to share this info with you guys, because these offers are so sweet, you may have a toothache from smiling over them!

Slow Cooker Dinner Rolls and a Giveaway

This conversation was sponsored but the recipe is from me to you, no strings attached, because I know you will love it!

This slow cooker dinner roll recipe is perfect for when the craving for bread hits but you are short on time.

I love to bake bread. It is one of those things that relaxes me and returns me to a simpler life, the aromas that come from my kitchen as the bread transforms from simple ingredients takes me back in time to my childhood, on Sunday mornings when my grandfather would bake fresh bread.

I had never baked in a slow cooker before so when Hamilton Beach offered to send me their awesome Professional Sous Vide and Slow Cooker I knew exactly what I wanted to make. Something different, something simple, something anyone could make without fail.

Slow Cooker Dinner Rolls! This recipe also works well for oven baked bread.

Slow Cooker Dinner Rolls

3 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 stick of real butter, softened
1/4 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of salt
2 1/2 teaspoons of active dry yeast
1 cup of warm milk
1 egg
1 teaspoons of butter flavored crisco

For the next step, I turned to my Hamilton Beach Professional Sous Vide and Slow Cooker, as it was cold in my drafty old house and you need a warm environment to successfully raise bread.

I liberally rubbed butter on the sides of the slow cooker pan, next I tore off handfuls of dough and formed it into balls, lining the slow cooker with the balls, spaced about 1/4 apart.
I turned my slow cooker on low for a 4-hour setting.
This allowed my dinner rolls adequate time to rise, then bake.

My rolls came out nicely. They had a delicious golden brown crust but they were as soft as cotton inside and out. The appearance isn't quite as gorgeous as traditional oven baked rolls, as it seems they didn't get as puffy, but the flavor is just as great.

This is a great way to bake bread when you have a busy day planned, or when your oven is tied up. If you happen to not have an oven, you will be so thankful to have this easy and delicious slow cooker dinner roll recipe for the next time a bread craving hits you!

I am crazy about the Hamilton Beach Professional Sous Vide and Slow Cooker, let me tell you what I like about it.

It holds 6 quarts, so it is perfect for cooking for a crowd, it does double duty on cooking capabilities, acting as both a sweet slow cooker and a sous vide cooker, which is a wonderful way to cook with water. It is easy to use, easy to clean and it has a timer! That is so nice!

This slow cooker makes a great gift option this holiday season and is available at Target for about $130.

I have been so happy with my Hamilton Beach that I want to give one to you guys! This giveaway will end on 11/30 and is open to US residents aged 18 and older.

Easy DIY Puzzles for Preschoolers

We love puzzles, but it seems like my kids lose a lot of the pieces in a short amount of time. When I learned about making our own puzzles a while ago, we were hooked. If a piece gets lost it is not an issue as we can make a whole new puzzle for pennies!

This is such an easy project you are going to wonder why you have never made these with your kids before!  It requires basic supplies and only a few moments of time to create. There is no prep time to speak of, and best of all your kids can make these on their own!

All you need to make puzzles are:
Clear tape
Classic Washable Markers
Craft Sticks

First, tape the craft sticks together.

Then draw a design on the opposite side.

Color in the background.

Peel the tape off of the back and scatter the sticks. And there you have an Easy Puzzle for toddlers and preschoolers. If you have older children, you might want to check out my idea for an easy DIY photo puzzle

These make a great gift idea for anyone wanting to give a sweet gift for a little one on a tight budget.

5 Secrets of Money Saving Superstars

So, you want to start saving money in earnest? While there are many tips and tricks out there, none of them will work without the right mindset. And while some people believe that those who are frugal are born that way, I disagree. Everyone has the capability to be more sensible with money - and today I’m going to reveal some of the secret habits and skills you need. Let’s dive in straight away.

See everything as a challenge, not a chore

Let’s face it, when you aren’t used to saving money wherever possible, it can feel like a drag. It’s just plain old hard work. You feel like you are missing out on things, rather than benefitting your life. But it’s an easy mindset to get out of - if you give it time. Instead of being disappointed you missed out on a takeout meal, be pleased that you have an extra $30 in your pocket. See money-saving as a challenge, and start rewarding yourself for getting products for less.

Always have a goal

It’s much easier to save money when you have goals. Whether it’s a reward or just a financial achievement - clearing a debt, for instance - the goals will drive you forward. When you are just starting out, never just save money just for the sake of it. You will find you start lacking enthusiasm very quickly, and will soon get back to your bad old ways.

Be more organized

If your finances are a mess, it can be hard to pinpoint where you are going wrong - or right. Money saving superstars know exactly where they need to look to make checks and find money saving tools. Take coupons, for example. When you are scouring the web for deals and cutting out coupons from every paper and magazine you come across, things are gonna get unwieldy. As The Fortunate Investor points out, it is essential that you develop your organization skills if you want to stay on top of your finances.

Be ruthless

Weigh up everything that you are spending money on and audit yourself regularly. Look for subscriptions that you don’t use anymore and cancel them. Speak to your utility providers - including your TV and Internet -and tell them you are going to leave. Be thrifty while out shopping for groceries, and create meal plans around the ingredients that are on offer. And, ask yourself whether it’s worth your money every time you open your wallet or purse.

Be creative

Finally, money savers are fantastically creative. They come up with amazing - and fun  - ways of spending time without spending money. Not only that but you will find that you are educating yourself a lot more. What’s better for the brain? A trip to one of your state’s free museums and an afternoon spent in a library? Or a day watching I Love Lucy repeats on cable?

Are you a money saving superstar? If so, feel free to leave some tips in the comments section - we would all love to hear from you!
